“Five Mile Beach” Through the Years
Even before the island of “Five Mile Beach” was glimpsed in 1609 by an explorer traveling with English navigator Henry Hudson, members of the Lenni Lenape tribe of Native Americans were cutting trails through the dense forest of what we now call the Wildwoods. It would be another 250 years before a few fishermen became the first white settlers, an an additional 25 years before seashore homes began to be constructed for a handful of privileged families.
